During 21-25 June 2010, Braila was involved in the training session on “IT and Public Access Computer management”, part of the program “Biblionet – Biblionet – the world in my library”.
Librarians from the communes of Galbenu, Mircea-Voda, RacoviÈ›a, city of Faurei and from the County Library of Braila met in the Training Center hosted by the County Library “Panait Istrati”. The trainers DragoÈ™ Neagu and Mihail Ichim made sure all trainees receive information relevant to their jobs and guided them in learning the essential notions for effective use of computers, internet, Word, Excel and many more.
Some of the librarians’ stories caught the attention:
a. In Racovita commune, librarian Sandel noticed that pupils in the VII-VIII grades “started to dislike learning and to get into some bad behaviors”. Thus, he asked them “what would interest them, what can the library do for them?”. He discovered that, except football players, they looked up to firemen. With this insight, the librarian gave a strong contribution in organizing a competition for the little firemen, together with the school and the authorities.
b. The Children and Youth Section in the "Panait Istrati" County Library also tells interesting stories, through its manager, Adelina Ioana. Recently, it hosted a philantropic exhibition of the The Romanian Union of Plastic Artists, with paintings sold for only 15 ron. „The money are a donation for children having trouble finishing their studies. A big achievement was also the expansion of the library’s users, as old photos of Braila brought to the library people who had never never visited us before, including local business people”.
c. In 2008, the County Library began a partnership with the Romanian Association of the Blind, Braila branch. Thus, visually impaired people have free access to a special digital library, the first one in Romania to convert text to speech. In Romania there are only 2 similar projects, in Iasi and Focsani.
d. In Mircea-Voda commune, librarian Tinca is collaborating closely with Points of Public Access to Information (in the Knowledge-Based Economy national project). In the school events, the library gives participants all the books and materials needed, within possibilities. Located in the House of Culture, the library is involved in many activities and is an important part of the community.
e. As of 2009, the central branch of the County Library is the weekly host of the Seniors’ Club. These meetings bring together around 10 elders every time, who enjoy the possibility to play chess, scrabble or backgammon. Moreover, they can attend library public events to discuss their interest topics with doctors, priests, psychologists.
The trained librarians in the first round are already well accommodated with their new role and status. All librarians are happy that the number of users is increasing and that the users will find here information they did not have access until now.
