During 10 May-2 July 2010, the program “Biblionet –The World in My Library” was in full swing in Galati. Thirty librarians in the county have enriched their knowledge and skills of “IT and Public Access Computers management”, in the 3 sessions held in the weeks 10-14 May, 14-18 June, 28 June-2 July.
The training took place at the Training Center of County Library “V.A.Urechia” Galați”. The localities represented in year 2 of Biblionet were: Barcea, Foltești, Umbrarești, Țepu, Oancea, Șendreni, Smardan, Cuca, Ghidigeni, Gohor, Buciumeni, Nicorești, Braniștea, Vladești, Suceveni, Grivița, Pechea, Munteni, Corni, Cudalbi, Virlezi, Matca, Cavadinești, Ivești. They were accomopanied by 4 colleagues from Branch 1 of the County Library.
Trainers Titina Dediu and Gabriel Manea filled the 3 sessions with lots of metaphors, comparisons and practical examples, to stimulate retention of the technical information. And it worked! The trainees were delighted with their learning about using and managing computers with internet access and they liked the “very nice atmosphere during the class”.
Group discussions and coffee breaks resulted in many current and future actions dedicated to the community:
a. The Holiday Club (Curious children’s club), an initiative of the County Library –gives children holiday activities (between July-September), every Wednesday. The small participants can grow fonder of books and stories, but also acting, popular traditions, painting and gold movies. It is also an excellent occasion for a short introduction in the world of Biblioteconomy.
b. In the commune of Ivesti, the nurses from the Chronic Disease Hospital borrow books from the library, for their patients to read.
c. In Cavadinesti, the librarian is already preparing to help users with documentation before a meeting with a supplier of construction materials. “People are already asking about online product catalogues with the newest products and price simulations”.
d. Teachers and pupils are eager to find on the internet ideas for school events, especially knowint that the librarian will be there to recommend the best search methods.
Also, the trainees have explored possibilities to renew their collections (mostly by encouraging donations), in order to improve the weak relationships to certain user groups. And, joking or not, they decided to stop directing readers to books with tragic endings, as it proved to scare readers off
In the near future, the libraries will receive the equipment necessary to start their new activity. A new stage in the community life will begin, as the library will be connected to all the informational resources of the internet. And the users will have the support of a fully trained librarian to make the best of them.
